• What Qualifications, Experience and Skills should I check for in an Occupational Therapist?

It's important to enquire about a therapist's Qualifications, Training, Experience and Specialism to ensure that you receive services from a well-trained and competent professional who, crucially, has specialised in treating your specific Conditions and Difficulties. 

It is, and always has been, our policy to provide detailed CV's, in response to your Enquiry, along with our Proposal and Costings. This ensures you have detailed evidence of a selected OT's Qualifications, Training, Experience and Specialism(s). All of our Occupational Therapists meet or exceed the following minimum academic, clinical and regulatory standards.

Education

An Occupational Therapist must have a Bachelor's Degree (BSc) or PostGraduate Qualification Certificate in Occupational Therapy (for example a PGCert or MSc).

Certification

An Occupational Therapist must be licensed to practice in the UK through the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Clinical Experience and Specialised Training

Clinical experience is a vital component of an occupational therapist's education and practice and The OT Centre asserts that you should only be treated by an OT who has experience in the OT Specialism pertinent to your specific Conditions and Difficulties.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for Occupational Therapists.; they need to effectively communicate you, your family, and other healthcare professionals to provide the best possible care.

• How Do I Know What Kind of Occupational Therapy Specialist I Need?

You may not always know what OT Specialism best meets your specific needs. Rest assured we do. When you Contact Us to discuss your needs, our Enquiries Team follow a clinically assured process to identify and clarify your specific Requirements and your Diagnoses/Conditions and Difficulties so that we can establish the appropriate OT Specialism and individual OT. We then provide you with a no-obligation proposal which includes costings together with one or more OT CV's for your decision.

• What happens if I decide I want treatment?
  Our Occupational Therapist will call you to arrange a convenient date for their visit and can answer any remaining questions you might have to ensure that you know what to expect and are prepared for your appointment. 

• Do I come to you for Appointments?
  No. Our Occupational Therapist will arrange to visit you in your own home. It's important for us to help you that we see you at home to best understand your individual needs and your environment. 

• What does your Occupational Therapist do when they see me?
  Our OT will typically undertake an assessment to understand your individual needs, challenges, and goals. The specific process may vary based on the setting your age and the nature of your condition. However, here is a general overview of what you might expect during an occupational therapy session:
  
  Initial Assessment:
  Our occupational therapist will gather information about your medical history, current abilities, and any specific concerns or goals you may have. They may observe how you perform certain activities and assess your physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning.
  
  Goal Setting:
  Collaboratively, you and the OT may establish goals for therapy based on your needs and priorities. Goals may relate to activities of daily living (ADLs), work-related tasks, or other areas depending on your specific circumstances.  The OT may develop a personalized intervention plan designed to address your unique challenges and goals.  Interventions may include exercises, activities, adaptive strategies, and environmental modifications.
  
  Therapeutic Activities:
  You may engage in various activities and exercises that target specific skills or areas of difficulty. These activities could involve fine and gross motor skills, sensory integration, cognitive skills, and more.
  
  Adaptive Equipment and Assistive Technology:
  Our occupational therapist may recommend and train you in the use of adaptive equipment or assistive technology to enhance your independence.
  
  Education and Training:
  OTs often provide education to clients and families about strategies to improve functioning and prevent further difficulties.

• What happens if I need to reschedule an appointment?
  Not a problem. We simply schedule another visit for a time which works for you.

• If I need equipment, is it provided as part of my treatment?
  No. It's important that an Occupational Therapist is independent of any equipment suppliers or manufacturers. By being independent, you can be confident that our advice is unbiased and that we won't try to sell you anything. If you need equipment or adaptations, our Occupational Therapist will highlight any need and will provide you with potential suppliers and indicative costs. The OT Centre has no affiliations or vested interests to equipment suppliers or manufacturers and we do not take or consider commission from suppliers.

• If I need equipment, do you provide training?
  If we recommend any equipment, we will also provide you with some potential suppliers. Suppliers often provide training as part of any equipment purchase, at no extra charge. There may be circumstances where training is best provided by an Occupational Therapist and in these instances, we will highlight this for you and let you know if there is an additional cost.

• What ongoing support will I have ?
  We naturally want to provide you with all the help and advice you need at your appointment and our Report will detail our treatment visit and our recommendations and advice. But if you have any remaining questions or need further advice, we're here for you.
