Neurodiversity Celebration Week is an annual event that celebrates the strengths, talents, and differences of neurodivergent people around the world.
At The OT Centre, we believe neurodivergent brains โ including autistic, ADHD, dyspraxic, and other neurological differences โ aren't broken or in need of fixing. They're simply wired differently, and the world wasn't designed with them in mind.
As occupational therapists specialising in sensory integration, we work every day with neurodivergent children and adults. Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming: we don't aim to change someone, but to help them navigate daily life with strategies that work for their unique brain.
Celebrate neurodivergent strengths โ creativity, pattern recognition, hyperfocus, authenticity, and innovative thinking
Challenge misconceptions โ neurodivergence is a natural variation, not a deficit
Advocate for acceptance โ not just awareness, but genuine understanding and accommodation
Share practical support โ the strategies and tools that make daily life easier
Throughout this week, we're sharing evidence-based strategies, educational content, and insights into how occupational therapy supports neurodivergent people to build independence, manage sensory challenges, and thrive on their own terms.
Whether you're neurodivergent yourself, parenting a neurodivergent child, or supporting neurodivergent people in your work, we're here with practical guidance rooted in understanding and acceptance.

Most people know about sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch - but there are 3 hidden sensory systems that are just as important;ย
โ๏ธ ๐ฉ๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ (๐๐ฎ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ):Tells us where our body is in space and how we're movingย
๐คธ ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป (๐๐ผ๐ฑ๐ ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐): Helps us understand where our body parts are without looking - how much force to use, coordinationย
When these 8 systems don't work together properly, everyday tasks become overwhelming. A child might struggle with handwriting, get motion sick easily, have meltdowns in busy places, or not recognize when they're hungry or need the loo.
Our SI qualified OTs work with children, adults and families to understand their sensory profiles and develop practical strategies for everyday life. We can assess precisely how all 8 sensory systems are working and create personalized strategies to help people regulate, participate, and thrive.ย
Sensory breaks aren't "time off task" - they're neurological regulation tools that improve learning capacity and classroom participation. Children with sensory processing differences (common in autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, and other neurodevelopmental conditions) often struggle to maintain optimal arousal levels for learning.
These three evidence-based approaches address different regulation needs:
๐ Movement Break: Vestibular and proprioceptive input for under-responsive sensory systems. Star jumps, high knees, or jogging provide the sensory feedback needed to increase alertness and focus.
๐ช Heavy Work Activity: Deep pressure input through wall pushes, chair pushes, or carrying heavy items activates the proprioceptive system, providing calming and organizing effects on the nervous system.
๐ง Calming Strategy: Deep breathing, gentle stretching, or quiet corner time activates the parasympathetic nervous system, supporting regulation when children are overwhelmed or overstimulated
Pack these essentials before your next shopping trip
๐ง Noise Protection: Loop earplugs or headphones reduce auditory overwhelmย
๐ Clear Plan: Know exactly what you need and where to find it - avoid panic grabbingย
๐คฒ Fidget Tool: Small, discreet tactile input for regulationย
๐ฌ Oral Sensory Input: Chewing gum or cold drink helps with regulation
๐ชExit Strategy: Know where exits are and give yourself permission to leave if needed
ย Shopping shouldn't mean sensory overload. These tools help you navigate busy environments while protecting your nervous system.ย
Occupational therapy for autism goes far beyond "fixing" challenges - it's about understanding individual needs and building practical skills for everyday life.
Our OTs support autistic children and adults with:
๐ง Sensory Processing Support: Understanding hyper/hypo sensitivities, creating regulation strategies, modifying environments, and building self-understanding
๐ Daily Living Skills: Self-care routines, hygiene, mealtimes, home management, and sleep strategies
๐ฅ Social Participation: Community access, school/workplace inclusion, support groups, and maintaining relationships
โ Motor Skills: Coordination, balance, handwriting, and fine/gross motor development
๐ Self-Regulation: Emotional regulation, understanding your emotions, and developing coping strategies
OT takes a holistic, strengths-based approach - working with autistic individuals to build skills, confidence, and independence.
Our assessments are neurodiversity-affirming and focus on what matters most to you or your child.
ADHD isn't just about attention - it impacts organisation, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and daily functioning. That's where occupational therapy comes in.
Our OTs support children and adults with ADHD through:
๐ Executive Function Support: Organisation strategies, time management, planning and sequencing tasks, memory aids
๐ฏ Sensory Regulation: Movement breaks, fidget tools, environmental setup (lighting, noise, seating), understanding your sensory needs
๐ก Attention & Focus: Workspace modifications, task breakdown strategies, concentration techniques, minimising distractions
โฐ Daily Routines: Morning/evening routines, meal planning, sleep hygiene, managing transitions
๐ School/Work Support: Reasonable adjustments, study strategies, workplace accommodations, self-advocacy skills
OT addresses the functional impacts of ADHD - helping individuals develop practical strategies for daily life, work, and learning.
Our assessments go beyond diagnosis - we focus on what's actually impacting your life and build strategies that work for you.
At The OT Centre we provide comprehensive sensory assessments and school-based intervention plans across England and Wales. We work collaboratively with SENCOs, teachers, and families to implement individualized, evidence-based strategies that support participation and learning.
SENCOs: Are sensory needs impacting learning outcomes in your setting? Our team can support whole-school approaches to sensory regulation.

Founded by Siena Castellon in 2018, Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. It aims to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and supported.
