What We Do

The OT Centre helps people regain lost skills, independence and quality of life after a major trauma such as an accident, head injury or stroke. Occupational Therapy is a clinical profession, regulated by the Health Professions Council and has codes of ethics and practice set out by the British Association of Occupational Therapists.

Our Occupational Therapists are specialists in Neurological Rehabilitation, treating a range of complex conditions including Brain Injury, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy and Spinal Cord Injury. We are qualified to do this because we select our Occupational Therapists for this field and no other.

All our Occupational Therapists have a degree in Occupational Therapy, have been practising for at least five years and have trained and practised for at least three of those in a specialist neurological unit.

Occupational Therapy Assessment
Occupational Therapy Assessment

We typically set aside two to three sessions in the home to appreciate and assess a client’s situation. We want to understand personal aspirations and expectations, together with clinical and environmental factors. We will review physical, cognitive, perceptual and functional abilities alongside the client’s living spaces and specialist needs. We conclude our assessment with a Report which sets out our clinical findings together with a proposed Rehabilitation Package. Our report details how we propose to help, how long we expect to work with the client and our recommendations for equipment, specialist technologies and home adaptations.

Occupational Therapy Rehabilitation

We use our Assessment to develop and document a set of personalised goals with the client. These are specific, measurable objectives, set in the context of our clinical assessment, representing practical steps towards independence at home and in the community and employment and leisure activities.

We will identify where specialist equipment, technology and home adaptations can be used to improve independence and quality of life. We can tailor our input, from providing initial advice and recommendations, through to managing specifications, selection and sourcing, supplier liaison, delivery, installation and use.

Occupational Therapy Training

In our experience, care teams and family are a fundamental part of a persons long-term rehabilitation, by virtue of their close daily personal contact. We can provide formal structured training for care teams, supported by competency frameworks, to augment and reinforce our Occupational Therapy interventions. We also help close family members provide practical support with confidence, crucially in the first three months at home, through insight, sensitive advice and training.
